Masterclass: 11 Plait Strand

Equipment:
  • Hairband
  • Hairbrush

Method:
  • Brush hair through.
  • Create a 5 strand plait first.
  • Once you have finished it tie a hairband at the end. When tying the plait make the outer strands of the plait loose.
  • On one side of the plait start to create a 3 strand plait but when a strand gets crossed over to the 5 strand plait side, link that over and into a loop of the strands from the outside of the 5 strand plait and then back into the 3 strand plait.
  • Continue looping the plaits together downwards and then tie the ends together into the hairband.
  • Repeat this with another 3 strand plait on the other side.
  • When finished, tighten any loose parts and tie the ends together with a hairband.
Outcome:
It took me a couple times to get the 5 strand plait right but it is quite easy to do once you understand where and how to hook each strand together. I think I did well for a first attempt just can never understand how to make it tidy at the beginning.

  • After you have applied the makeup brush the curls out.
  • On the top sections back comb underneath at the roots to give it volume and ruffle to look messy
  • Finish the style by hairspraying it all over.
Outcome:
For my assessment I did a practice of my Tom Ford Nail Laquer Look. The design is a rock chick look inspired by Tom Ford's Spring/Summer 2015 Makeup Collection. Overall I really liked the results of my look although I felt that the pictures didn't show that hair off the best it could. The curls look good but the it needs more volume at the top in these images. The only thing I'd change about the makeup is the eyeliner because I think a black shade would have made it look more intense.

Classic Shapes and Silouhettes

Equiment:
  • Hairband
  • Hair brush
  • Hair grips
  • Pintail Comb
  • Hair Dryer
  • Mousse
  • Hairspray
Method:
  • To make the hair sleek, blow dry the hair from bottom to hair.
  • To do this, section of the bottom of the hair and blow dry the hair from top to bottom of the section while brushing the hair under at the same time.
  • Continue to do this method working your way up to the top of the hair.
  • Tie the hair up by brushing it through and try to keep the hair as smooth as you can. Combing mousse into the hair will help this effect.
  • Make sure the hair is up tie and once you are happy with the smoothness and height, tie the hair with a hairband. A bungee tie will also help secure the ponytail
  • If there are any fly aways or baby hairs, carefully comb mousse through it nd into the rest of the hair or hairspray them and comb them into the hair.
Outcome:
I found this method really easy to do and am happy with the results.

Equipment:

  • Pintail comb
  • Hair grips

Method:

  • Square off top section.
  • Wrap one side under top section and around to the other side and pin it. Do same with the other side section.
  • Take top section and backcomb in section.
  • Brush over and pin at the back to create high hair.
Progression:
I think my first attempt at this look turned out really well and I am happy with the results. I found it easy and straight forward to do.

  • Use a     on the hairdryer to control frizz.
  • Place hairdryer under the hair in sections and put the hair into the      .

  •  Progress:
I found the method quite easy to do and am quite confident in recreating this look. I think as I started creating other styles with this type of hair I became more comfortable and could understand how the final outcomes of these styles should look - messy and natural.
     Pushed back style
     Chignon bun style
    Fish plait style

    Fashion Plaits

    Equipment:
    • Hair bands
    • Hair brush
    • Hair grips
    Methods:
    5 strand plait -
    • Separate your section into 5 strands and from left to right name the strands 1 2 3 4 and 5.
    • Take strand 1 and put it over strand 2 and then under strand 3 so that strand 1 is now in the middle. Hold strand 2 and 3 by pulling to keep the plait tight.
    • Now take strand 5 and put it over strand 4 then under strand 1 making strand 5 the middle strand.
    • Hold tight onto strand 1 and 4 and let go of strand 2 and 3.
    • Now that strand 2 is the outside strand on the left repeat the same technique you did when strand one was the outside strand by putting it over strand 3 and then under strand 5.
    • Continue to do this method on each outside strand until you get to the bottom of the hair and 5 strand plait is complete.
    • To secure tie a hair band at the end.
    Outcome:
It took a couple times for me to get it right but it is really easy once you know what your doing.

    Waterfall plait -
    • Create this plait from the side front to back of the hair.
    • Start by creating one plait with 3 strands.
    • On the next plait of the strand drop the middle strand and then pick up a new strand and introduce it into the plait.
    • Continue to do this through out the plait.
    • When completed, pin the end of the waterfall plait into the hair to stay secure.
    • You can also create another plait underneath and join the top one into it.
    • To do this create a plait and join the middle sections that dropped from the plait above as you go along the plait.
    • Secure the end with a pin into the hair.
    Outcome:
When I did this method the hair had a bouncy texture and wouldn't flow properly when I dropped the middle strand.

    Slip Tie Knot plait -
    • Section the hair into 4 or 5 sections from the top of the hair to the bottom.
    • Working your way from top to bottom, take the front top section and split this section down the middle into 2 strands.
    • Tie a knot and then get the model to hold the sections, keeping them tight.
    • Take the next section and, again, split the section into 2 strands and tie them in a knot.
    • Get model to hold these strands too.
    • On the next section split them into two and join the strands from the 1st section into these strands on each side.
    • Now tie these strands into a knot.
    • On the 4th section, again, split it into 2 strands and now join the 2nd section strands into the these strands on each strand and tie a knot.
    • Repeat this on the last section so that the 3rd strands join the 5th section strands and tie a knot.
    • You can finish this look by plaiting any remaining hair at the bottom or rolling the remaning hair under the bottom securing it in with pins.
    Outcome:
I found this method really easy to do and am happy with the outcome.

    Pull plait -
    • Create a normal three strand plait
    • when finished pinch an end of one of the strands and pull the other two up that strand.
    Outcome:
This method is really is to do but I found it hard to make this style look how it should.

    Modern Hair Updo with Accessories

    Equipment:
    • Hairband
    • Accessories
    • Hair grips
    • Pintail comb
    • Hair brush
    Method:
    • Section the front of hair from back using pintail comb. The section point should be at the ears.
    • Brush the back section into a ponytail and tie it with a hairband.
    • To create the bun, roll the hair pushing it upwards and rolling it into the hairband point.
    • Make sure the shape is rounded and doesn't look like a big barrel curl/ roll.
    • Once you have created the shape, pin it with grips in and around the hairband area.
    • Next, take one front side section and twist it back and over the bun to the other side of the head and pin it securely with grips. Do this again with the other front side section going over to the other side of the head and pin.
    • To add accessories, apply them to the style in a way that would suit it. e.g. put the accessories sitting over/on the twists at the back, or around the front of the style like a head band. Secure the accessories with pins.
    Progress:
It took me a couple times to get the bun shape right but I managed to create it in the end and am happy with the results. I enjoyed experimenting with the accessories and making them work with the style

    Beehive

    Beehive
    Equipment:
    -         Curlers
    -         Sectioning clips
    -         Hair grips
    -         Hairspray
    -         Dry Shampoo
    -         Pintail comb
    Method:
    -         Section the front of the hair from the back at the ears.
    -         Take the back section and from the top barrel curl in sections, working your way down to the mid back of the head (nobby part of head).
    -         When curling each section, make sure the curl is tight and keep it in place using sectioning clips.
    -          Make a triangle on each side of the top curl and curl those sections. This will help make the shape more rounded.
    -         Take the sectioning clips out and construct the shape by backcombing all the sections.
    -         Depending on what type of beehive you want, if you want it to have loose hair hanging at the front then take some of the front section from the ears and forward, and then bring that section over the backcombed part. If you want all the hair put into a beehive then scoop all of the front section back over the backcombed part.
    -         Shapen the beehive by combing it and making it into a round shape. Using the pintail part of the comb can also help create the shape.
    -         Poke the inside of the beehive to make sure it has enough stability to stay put.
    -         To finish, hairspray the shape.

    Outcome:
For my first try I found it difficult to create the round shape for the beehive and also struggled combing the front section over the beehive but I think that was because the hair on the dolls head was quite worn out. For a first attempt I did manage to get the height right it just needed to be more round and not so bumpy.
